Article in Yorkshire Evening Post May 2010

The cost of caring for Britain's ageing population has left councils facing a growing financial headache. However, a system launched in Leeds may offer a solution for the rest of the country to follow. Since 1840, the highest average life expectancy has improved by a quarter of a year every year, leading experts to predict that 100-year-olds will become unexceptional within the lifetimes of people alive today.

These extended lifespans may be great news for those of us who hope to live long enough to see our great grandchildren and perhaps even our great, great grandchildren, but at the same time they pose difficult questions for society as a whole.

Volunteers from a local company who have overcome a gruelling 230 mile charity challenge to cycle the width of the country have been praised by a local Councillor. Four employees from Leeds-based electronics distributor, Premier Farnell PLC, took part in a six-day coast to coast bike ride from St Bees Head to Robin Hood’s Bay to raise funds for Armley Helping Hands, who provide home-care to older people in Leeds. This event was the second similar challenge recently undertaken by the Farnell cycling team having last year cycled from Leeds to Liverpool raising £1000 for the Helping Hand’s charity.  farnells_co_024

Cllr Alison Lowe, who helped with the transport arrangements to get the cyclists to their start point at St Bees Head, was delighted to have been involved in the challenge and paid tribute to everyone involved in the event.

Councillor Alison Lowe (Armley) said “I want to congratulate the four fantastic volunteers who took part in this challenge and thank them for raising some vital funding for Armley Helping Hands who play such an important role for older people in Armley.” Graham Hogg (event participant) said: “The elderly are a vulnerable and often forgotten part of the community and so we were delighted to take part in this challenge to raise funds which will enable Armley Helping Hands to do more of their invaluable work in the local community.”

THEIR hands helped build a city, now a new exhibition pays tribute to Leeds's industrial heroines and their nimble fingers.

The photos at Armley Mills Industrial Museum celebrate Leeds's textile heritage and features as its highlight some powerful images of the hands of many of the workers who sewed their way into history.

The exhibition, entitled Wool, is the work of Armley photographer Casey Orr, who used women from Armley Helping Hands, a charity for the elderly, as her subjects.

Website for older people launched in Armley

A training session for older people in Armley and Wortley was held at the Park Lane College Leeds St Bartholomew’s Centre this week, to help launch a new specialist website for older people.

The Infostore (www.olderpeopleleeds.info) has been developed by Leeds City Council, working in partnership with Leeds Older People’s Forum and Leeds Primary Care Trust. The site is for older people themselves, their relatives and carers, and for professionals. It contains details of hundreds of organisations and services and access to a huge range of leaflets, guides and other useful documents. Armley Helping Hands, and many of its members, have been closely involved in the development process.
